Capturing the essence of an iconic orchestra through branding photography is no easy task, but when the Cleveland Pops Orchestra reached out for a shoot, I knew it was a project I had to be a part of. This shoot was not just another gig—it was a unique opportunity to blend art, music, and photography and to showcase the incredible talents of the musicians who make up this celebrated ensemble. I'm also thrilled to share that our efforts did not go unnoticed. The photos from this session won the 2024 Hermes Award Platinum in the category of Print Media | Photography | Brand Evolution Through Photography, standing out among over 6,500 entries from around the globe. The energy, dedication, and sheer passion of the musicians shined through every photograph, making it one of the most memorable experiences of my career.

The Cleveland Pops Orchestra is known for its vibrant performances that blend classical music with popular tunes, creating an electrifying experience for audiences of all ages. For this branding shoot, the goal was to capture the spirit of the orchestra in a way that felt modern, approachable, and, most importantly, fun. I wanted to break away from the traditional, formal portrayal of orchestras and instead showcase the dynamic and engaging nature of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra.
One of the most memorable aspects of the shoot was how the musicians’ personalities shined through. You might think of orchestras as formal and rigid, but the Cleveland Pops musicians are far from that stereotype. They’re lively and enthusiastic, and most of all, they love what they do. The laughter and lighthearted banter between takes made the entire day feel like a celebration of their collective artistry.

The musicians came dressed to impress—men in classic black suits, crisp white shirts, and ties, while the women wore elegant dresses that added a touch of sophistication to the shoot. One standout was the clarinet player, who rocked a bright red coat that was impossible to miss. The pop of color added a modern and edgy vibe, making the image as cool and lively as the musician himself.
Playing with various backdrop colors, we moved beyond the typical orchestra imagery, creating vibrant photos that matched the dynamic energy of the Cleveland Pops. Each shot felt like a celebration of the musician's personality, capturing their joy, focus, and connection to their instrument. I loved the vibe everyone brought to the session—it was the perfect blend of formal elegance and fun.
These solo shots not only captured the musicians in their element but also gave each performer their moment in the spotlight, reflecting the individuality that collectively makes the Cleveland Pops Orchestra so special.
It was a great honor when these photos won the 2024 Hermes Award Platinum for Print Media | Photography | Brand Evolution Through Photography. The Hermes Creative Awards, judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP), received over 6,500 entries from around the world, including top agencies, PR firms, and freelancers. Winning this award not only highlighted the success of this photoshoot but also underscored the vibrant spirit and dedication of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra.
